The Alchemy of Awakening : The Seven Phases of Transformation
By Lola Archer Pickett ·
We often picture Alchemy as a mystical process that unfolds inside a secret laboratory full of bubbling cauldrons and glass jars of mysterious powders. Picture it now: a wild-haired scholar-poet in long robes, pouring fluids back and forth and cooking strange substances in pans until, in one explosive moment, BAM!
Lead becomes gold.
According to legends, the prize for mastering Alchemy was the elusive Philosopher’s Stone, a key not only to completing the metallic transformation but to eternal youth and all the wisdom of Creation.
While today we understand Alchemy to be a mostly metaphorical process, its seven phases offer a timeless map for personal growth. Just as metal is refined by fire, we are shaped by the pressures and challenges of our lived experiences. Every difficulty carries the potential to transform us, inviting us to release what no longer serves, to emerge with less illusion and more integrity.
One of my early mentors, Robin Rice, taught me to see Alchemy as a map: a way of understanding the natural and inevitable stages of awakening. To know the map is to know where you are on your journey, what is likely coming next, and how best to navigate the path ahead.
It is a map we travel time and again throughout our lives, and I’ve personally experienced how, just when I think I’ve “arrived” somewhere, life will often humble me and shake away another layer of ego. Understanding that this is normal, no matter how “evolved” I think I am, has kept me from sinking into self-blame, judgment, and insecurity when life starts feeling like it’s happening to, rather than through, me.
In the Wild Messengers® guidebook, I introduce the seven phases of Alchemy in short form. This page is for the longer conversation: how to know which phase(s) you’re in, what helps while you’re there, and which Messengers may be particularly helpful to work with.
Alchemy is a spiral, not a line
Alchemy’s phases are often described in order, but they rarely occur that way. They return in cycles across a lifetime. You may be in one phase in your relationships and another in your work, spiral back to an earlier phase, or recognize a familiar pattern arriving in a new context.
If you choose to embrace the process, each alchemical journey takes you deeper, shaped by new circumstances, greater capacity, and everything you’ve integrated.
Learning to recognize where you are, and what may be approaching, helps you meet life’s inevitable changes with more awareness, trust, and self-compassion. Once you can read the map, you are no longer a victim of circumstance. You become a co-creator with the mystery.
The seven phases
1. Calcination (Fire)
Alchemy begins in the fire. Calcination happens when ego, beliefs, identities, or ways of operating are challenged or destabilized. Pretense, attachments, and the stories we tell about ourselves are burned away. In some shamanic traditions, this is known as dismemberment, or the death of the ego. (The ego tends to put up a fierce fight when it faces annihilation, so this is often far from comfortable to experience.)
Sometimes we light the match ourselves. Other times, we get burned by an illness, a relationship in crisis, a lost job, a buried trauma coming to light, a death. Though it may seem to happen to us, ultimately the fire is for our benefit ~ if we choose to perceive it as such. This is the breakdown that precedes the breakthrough.
As Dennis Hauck writes in The Emerald Tablet, “Calcination is working with Fire to burn away mental constructs and reveal a person’s true essence.”
How it can feel: heat in the chest and throat. A sudden intolerance for performance and pretense; often with a great personal cost if you stop. Illusions burn away as new truths render old perceptions and identities obsolete. Attachments loosen, through loss or simply a loss of resonance. You are not the same person you were, and your relationships feel it.
What helps: refuse to be victimized by what’s happening. This is not karmic punishment, bad luck, or proof that you’re doing anything wrong. Trust the destruction as a necessary clearing before something truer can arise. You don’t have to leap straight into gratitude, either; rushing there can be a subtle form of spiritual bypassing. Let yourself grieve what’s been lost. As Martin Prechtel teaches, grief is a form of praise, a measure of how much you loved that version of yourself, your life, your choices. Resist the temptation to rush into reconstruction. And if burning everything down feels victorious, notice that this is only step one in Alchemy.
Ask yourself: Where, what, or with whom can I no longer pretend?
Messengers that align with this phase: 0 Fool (Coyote), 7 Journey (Wild Horse), 15 Trickster (Raven)
2. Dissolution (Water)
Water is not so much an agent of change as an expression of change. Whether through driving rain, river torrents, seeping springs, or rising steam, Water reshapes the landscape simply by existing. The expression itself is the change agent.
After the trial by fire comes the baptism of water. Structures loosen and ash softens. What was hidden below begins to surface. Certainty dissolves, boundaries blur, and experiences that were contained start to move, sometimes as grief, sometimes as tears that arrive without explanation.
We may be impatient to leap into action, into what’s next, into anything but this ebbing and erosion, but Water asks us first to slow down, to sit in the unknowable, to befriend the void.
How it can feel: tender, emotional, unmoored. Like you can’t find the edges of things. Emotions arrive in ways you haven’t felt before. Dreams become vivid, repetitive, or thematic. Your triggers begin to look a little like mirrors.
What helps: feel. Tend your own waters through hydration, rest, and expression. Immerse yourself in your dreams. Let emotions exist without needing to understand or explain them.
Watch for two opposite shadows here: either holding on too tightly to what was or how you wish it were, or letting go so completely that you fall into a seductive trance with the abyss itself.
You may feel you’ll drown in your own depths. But, what if you trust your ability to swim, to dive, perhaps even to breathe under water?
What if you are made for this, able to root into the floor of your inner ocean while rising toward the light like a kelp forest?
At least half of the oxygen we breathe comes from the plants of the sea. Life requires the gifts of the watery realms.
Ask yourself: What is ready to flow now that it’s no longer held so tightly?
Messengers that align with this phase: 1 Alchemist (Jaguar), 8 Power (Bison), 16 Initiation (Rattlesnake)
3. Separation (Air)
Discernment and clarification. Think of Separation as a sifting, where what remains after Dissolution is run through a sieve. That Which Belongs is separated from That Which Does Not Belong.
Wind separates the wheat from the chaff, blowing away the non-essential and leaving the heavier essence behind.
You begin to discern what is genuinely yours from what you inherited, absorbed, or assumed.
Truths sharpen and expired loyalties reveal themselves. What once felt like a central part of you turns out to be borrowed, and what once felt foreign turns out to be ancestral.
How it can feel: clear and sometimes lonely. Like sorting a house you’ve lived in for years and seeing just how few of your possessions actually matter to you in the end.
What helps: unlike the first two phases, Separation is usually entered with awareness and intent. Participate actively. Journal, have honest conversations, and give yourself time alone with your own thoughts.
Ask yourself: When you notice a story or habitual thought pattern arise, ask yourself, “Whose voice is this, really?”
So many of our thoughts are not truly our own, truthful, or useful. This is a time to separate yourself from your own mind and recognize that you are not your thoughts, your intelligence, your stories, your past, or your body. Instead, you are the witness, you are the soul, you are the animating force.
At any time, you can change your mind.
Messengers in this phase: 2 Healer (Moose), 9 Retreat (Caracal), 17 Star (Zebra)
4. Conjunction (Earth)
Integration and alignment. Earth arrives as the vessel for change to take shape. With your distractions burned, illusions dissolved, and core essence filtered, what was split apart can finally meet: intellect with intuition, strength with tenderness, knowing with action, the inner masculine with the inner feminine.
The alchemists called this part of the process Sacred Marriage or Divine Union. We can feel and think clearly. We can give and receive. We can act and rest. We feel integrated and whole.
Hauck describes Conjunction as “the coming together of opposites and [a] constellation of new beliefs that change our personalities at the deepest levels.” Those new beliefs often arrive through a catalyst: a person, teacher, or experience that shows us a possibility we can never unknow.
This is why relationship (particularly intimate partnership) is so often a vehicle for spiritual growth.
How it can feel: grounded, whole, quietly steady. A relief you can feel in your body. Inspired actions make themselves known, and you choose to act on them without giving in to doubt, overwhelm, or distraction. You make genuine self-caring a priority, even when it takes form as new boundaries that make others feel uncomfortable or inconvenienced.
What helps: devotion. Return again and again to what you know to be true, regardless of how you feel or think in the moment.
Devotion is embodiment.
Boundaries are embodiment.
Ritual is embodiment.
Creation is embodiment.
Close the back doors that dilute your commitment. It’s time to go ALL IN on something, even if you have no guarantee of the outcome.
Bring the new insight into your body and your days: walk, garden, make something with your hands. And notice the temptation to assume that you’ve arrived somewhere because you are no longer imprisoned by your expired stories, addictions, or old ways of being. The work is never done.
Ask yourself: What two parts of me are finally on speaking terms?
Messengers in this phase: 3 Gaia (Orca), 10 Destiny (Jellyfish), 18 Moon (Black Panther)
The second half of the map
After Conjunction, the elements return in their subtler forms if you are ready and willing to continue releasing into your own evolution. However, if you resist or allow yourself to stagnate, you’ll find yourself cycling through endless loops of the first four phases.
So, if you feel like you’ve been on a perpetual treadmill of almost, it may be time to look at what you’ve been holding on too tightly to ~ an identity, a relationship, a role… Life will continue burning things away until you decide to experience the heartbreak with an open heart, open mind, and open hands.
The alchemists named three principles for this deeper work: Sulfur, Mercury, and Salt, the soul, spirit, and body of the alchemist.
Sulfur carries Fire’s heat as soul and inspiration. Mercury carries Air as spirit and breath. Salt carries Earth as an embodied form, as a channel for current.
The first four phases work on the raw material of your life.
The last three work on the core essence that remains.
5. Putrefaction and Fermentation (Sulfur)
Darkness and delight, two halves of one phase.
Putrefaction begins in darkness, where the gross begins its transformation into the subtle. What you’ve refined into a conjunction must decompose and fully surrender. This is the nigredo, the black phase.
The relationship you thought you’d solidified and refined goes through a subtler, but no less destabilizing, crisis.
The business you’d built from a place of alignment begins to chafe.
What appeared stable turns out to require more work.
Then, from the compost, the spark.
Fermentation is Fire returned as a gentle inner warmth: the kind of heat we feel when we start to pursue and honor what our soul actually wants.
Softened and opened by all four elements, we are finally open enough to receive divine inspiration. Spirit speaks and, at last, we can hear it.
Fermentation’s spark may arrive through a mystical experience, devoted meditation, sustained dancing, deep desire, sacred sexuality, visionary plant medicine work, or any deep encounter with beauty, grace, and mystery. It carries vision and life force that did not, and could not, exist before.
The alchemists called this state True Imagination, which Hauck describes as “a state of consciousness in which mental images or visions seem more representative of reality than anything that we can see with our eyes.”
How it can feel: at first stagnant, low, strangely between lives. This is not failure, this is the darkness that precedes the divine. Then, often without warning, alive: vivid dreams, heightened intuition, bursts of vision and creativity.
What helps: During Putrefaction: time alone in the dark, patience, gentleness, and skillful facilitation support. Let the dark do its work, and when or if it becomes too heavy to hold alone, reach out to your favorite therapist, somatic practitioner, or medicinekeeper. You do not have to hold space for yourself on your own.
During Fermentation: pleasure. Slow down enough for your felt senses to meet life force. Reality is so much richer than the headlines would have you believe.
Watch the temptation to stay high and escape everyday life, or to feel morally/spiritually superior to those who don’t live here.
Fermentation can feel like you’ve reached the summit, like you know all there is to know, but there are still two phases to go.
Ask yourself: What is composting in me, and what might it feed? How good can I allow myself to feel?
Messengers in this phase: 4 Elder (Ram), 11 Karma (Praying Mantis), 19 Sun (Bald Eagle)
6. Distillation (Mercury)
Refinement and clarity. Air returns as the breath of Spirit and the Higher Self, winnowing away the last clinging remnants of your ego as the driver of your life. Through repeated cycles of insight surfacing, being tested, and settling deeper, your essence keeps purifying.
Wisdom sharpens. Vision simplifies. You find less gratification in “transmitting wisdom” and begin to experiment with perhaps your presence being enough. No longer needing to be considered the wise one, you find yourself at peace without needing to prove anything.
Here we recognize that any human identity we take on is ultimately an illusion. It can’t hold the complexity and sacred nature of who we are. Our identities grow more fluid. Titles no longer define us. What we do matters less than how we do it. In its highest expression, our love becomes vast and trustworthy.
How it can feel: like the same lessons arriving again, each time lighter and more precise. Your heart stays open no matter what life brings.
What helps: repetition. Daily practice, revisiting the same questions, noticing what stays true. Hold your identity loosely, but don’t use fluidity as a reason to avoid commitment to what matters. Stay compassionate. There are many ways to evolve and timelines for awakening, and each person is on their own journey.
Ask yourself: What’s still true?
Messengers in this phase: 5 Oracle (Wolf), 12 Shift (Bat), 14 Integration (Hart), 20 Choice (Owl)
7. Coagulation (Salt)
Purification embodied. The Philosopher’s Stone is not a substance. It is a way of life. In Coagulation we bring heaven back to Earth, becoming Spirit and Soul made real within the sacred vessels of our bodies.
Wisdom shows up in your behavior, your choices, and how you carry yourself. Your understanding is no longer abstract. It is seen and felt, integrated and stable.
The old masters called this enlightenment. I prefer to think of it as the full embodiment of the shamanic bridge, where the human experience is utterly merged with the divine.
Our fear of death has been faced, our grief experienced as love’s highest praise. We are the Phoenix, risen and made from the ashes of our former life, kin to the trees and the stones, humble enough to learn from the soil, the stars, our elders, and our children.
We are no more or less than any other being, and as such, are free.
How it can feel: settled and quietly powerful. You still feel the ordinary weather of doubt and fear, anxiety and depression, yet you can hold them as temporary states, you can hold them as medicines. You find your way back to a flow state more easefully.
Other people may notice the change in you before you name it to yourself or anyone else.
What helps: celebrate it. Mark your Coagulation, your congruence with a ritual, then rest before life brings its next fire.
Keep the pace of your life slow enough to feel and for your intuition to surface, so you stay connected to the Presence you’ve found.
Ask yourself: Who am I being in the quiet, unremarkable moments?
Messengers in this phase: 6 Divine Union (Tiger), 13 Rebirth (Butterfly), 21 Home (Sea Turtle)
And then, we begin again. Back into the fires of Calcination, each pass around the alchemical spiral bringing a little less fear and a little more grace for ourselves and our humanity.
The elements in the process
Fire teaches that destruction comes before creation. It is not something to fear. Each time Fire appears it grows gentler, moving from the burn of Calcination to the soul fire of Sulfur.
Water teaches that expression itself creates change. Water seeks depth, and cultivating relationships that can witness your emotional range is part of the work. Grounding prevents drowning.
Air is the sifter and the shifter. It clarifies perspective, breathes life into stagnation, and midwives the subtler levels of change, moving from wind to Spirit.
Earth is the vessel that holds transformation: the cocoon to the caterpillar, the circle and fuel for the Phoenix fire. By staying connected with the Earth as our ally, intellectual knowledge can become embodied wisdom.
The cards of the Major Arcana move through these phases three times
Cards 0 through 6 carry the seven phases once, 7 through 13 carry them again, and 15 through 21 carry them a third time. Each pass goes deeper. Card 14, Integration (Hart), sits between the second and third passes as a Distillation, a moment of refinement before the descent into the final cycle.
How to work with Alchemy in a reading
- Notice the phase, not just the card. When a Major Arcana card appears, ask which phase it carries and whether that phase describes or offers support for what you’re navigating right now.
- Look for repeats. Several cards from the same phase in one spread is a strong message about the season you’re in.
- Look ahead. The phase after the one you’re in can illuminate what this moment is preparing you for, helping you hold the course and steady yourself if it’s been feeling particularly turbulent.
- Track it over time. Note the phase of your daily draw in a journal. Over a month or a season, your evolutionary spiral becomes visible.
If you’d like to practice working with Alchemy and the cards, we’ve created an Alchemy Spread for you over in the journal.
