Across the Veil: A Samhain Tarot Spread for Letting Go
By Lola Pickett ·
The Thinning
There is a night each year when the air changes its weight. The light leaves earlier and stays gone longer. The fields have given what they had to give, and the stalks stand pale and hollow, finished. This is Samhain, the old Celtic new year, the hinge between the bright half of the year and the dark.
Our ancestors understood this as the time when the veil between worlds grows thin. What is usually hidden comes close enough to touch. The dead walk near. The unseen parts of ourselves rise toward the surface, asking to be looked at.
This is not a season for gathering more. It is a season for sifting through what we have gathered. In alchemy, it’s a time of distillation and separation.
The harvest is in. Now comes the honest work of deciding what to keep, what to store for the long dark, and what to lay down on the earth and let return to it.
The spread below was made for that work. I call it Across the Veil.
Preparing the Space
Wait until dark. Samhain falls on the night of October 31, but the veil stays thin for several nights on either side, so choose the evening that lets you arrive at this ritual unhurried.
Clear a surface and light a single candle. If you keep photographs or small belongings of those who came before you, set them nearby. A bowl of something from the harvest season belongs here too: apples, pomegranate, a handful of grain, acorns, fall leaves, whatever the season has placed in your hands.
Then lay down your veil. A length of ribbon, a scarf, a line of salt, a sprig of rosemary for remembrance. Lay it horizontally across the center of the space where you’ll lay your cards.
This is the threshold. Everything above it lives in the light ~ where you can see it. Everything below it lives in the deep ~ where you’ll find roots, ancestors, and all that is hidden.
Shuffle the cards slowly. Breathe gently down into your belly and imagine your body is softly and lovingly held by the Earth. When you feel ready, speak aloud, softly, or only in your mind:
I cast this threshold with open hands, heart, and mind. I kindly request to see what is ready to be released, and I ask for the wisdom of those well ancestors who walked before me.
The Across the Veil Spread
Draw six cards. Lay the first three in a row above the veil, left to right. Lay the next three in a row below it, each one directly beneath its partner. You can interpret them as pairs as well as alone. What sits above is often answered by what sits below.
Above the Veil: What You Can See
1. What I carry to the threshold. This is what you are holding as the year turns. A belief, a role, a grief, a habit of the heart. Let this card show you the shape of it without judgment. You have carried it this far for a reason.
2. What I am asked to set down. This is the husk. It once protected something tender and alive in you, and its work is now complete. Notice whether you feel relief or resistance when you turn this card over. Both are information.
3. What waits on the other side. This is what becomes possible once your hands are empty. Not a promise, but an opening. Let it be a little mysterious. The dark half of the year does its best work unseen.
Below the Veil: What Moves Beneath
4. A message from those who came before. On this night the ancestors lean close. This card carries their counsel, whether from your bloodline, your lineage of teachers, or the long line of witches, seers, and wild ones who sat at thresholds like this one before you. Read it as a letter written to you.
5. The hidden gift in letting go. Every release carries a shadow gift. This card shows what you will reclaim when you stop spending your energy holding on. Often it is something you abandoned in yourself to keep the old thing alive.
6. The integrated path forward. This is the card to carry with you into winter. It shows how what you have seen, above and below, comes together into a path of healthy embodiment. After the reading, place this card somewhere you will see it in the weeks ahead.
Writing Through the Veil
Before you put the cards away, take up your pen. Let your reading settle into words.
What have I been tending out of expired loyalties rather than love?
We rarely clutch at something because we still want it. We hold on because letting go feels like a betrayal of who we were, or of someone who taught us to carry it. Write until you find the thread of that loyalty. Follow it back as far as it goes.
When you reach the end, turn to a fresh page and write the second question:
If I laid this on the ancestral altar tonight, as a gesture of willingness to let it go, what would I ask to be returned to me in its place?
This is the harvest side of the ritual… Because release is only half of the work. The other half is receiving. So, let yourself ask for something real.
Closing the Threshold
When you are finished writing, return to card two, the one that named what you are setting down. Hold it for a moment. Thank it for its service. Then place it face down below the veil, among the ancestors, and leave it there overnight.
Offer something from your harvest bowl to the earth, to a tree, or to the threshold of your door. Speak your thanks to those who came before you. Blow out the candle.
In the morning, gather the cards. Keep card six where you can see it.
The dark half of the year is not an ending. It is the fertile darkness of the soil. Everything you laid down tonight is planted into this void: seeds of becoming that which will feed you next.
Blessed Samhain.
